Unnao: One arrested after madrasa students attacked, forced to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’

The arrest was made after the accused were identified with the help of their social media handles.

New Delhi: After a group of madrasa students were attacked in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, on July 11, police have arrested one accused, reported News18.com.

The students were allegedly attacked with cricket bats and forced to chant Jai Shri Ram while they were playing in the Government Inter College (GIC) grounds. The accused also tore their kurtas and vandalised their bicycle.

On the students’ complaint, a case was registered against four people, out of whom one has been arrested.

The students belonged to Darul Uloom Faiz-E-Aam which is situated in the Sadar area of Unnao.

It has been reported that around three to four people forced the students to chant slogans of Jai Shri Ram and started beating them with cricket bats. Stones were pelted on the students when they tried to flee the ground.

According to ANI, Naeem Misbahi, a maulana from Jama Masjid, said that the Facebook profiles of the culprits show they have links to Bajrang Dal, a right-wing group.

Circle Officer Umesh Tyagi said the students of the madrasa, located near Jama Masjid, play cricket in the GIC ground on Thursdays. He informed reporters that a case was registered as per the complaint filed by the students and action is being taken in the case.

The arrest was made after the accused were identified with the help of their social media handles.

Speaking about the allegation of forcible chanting of Jai Shri Ram, MP Verma, Superintendent of Police, Unnao said, “(That) can only be confirmed after investigation.”

The authorities of the madrasa and Jama Masjid have demanded strict action against the culprits.

“The madrasa students were beaten up when they failed to chant Jai Shri Ram. Also, their clothes were torn and their bicycles vandalised. Now it is up to the administration what action they take against the culprits,” said the Imam of the Jama Masjid.
